Guidelines for Glasses and Sunglasses

Fitting children's glasses:

  • Size: It is okay to fit the frame a slightly larger size than is currently needed by the child so as to allow for growth. Do not go more than ½ a size.
  • Nose Pads: The position of the nose pads should be such that it does not cause unnecessary irritation on the bridge. If any irritation is noticed after the child starts to wear the glasses, return to the optical shop for additional adjustments
  • Temple Styles: Two different types of temples are available. Cable temples are used for infants or very young children as the cable helps maintains the glasses on the child's face. Standard Paddle temples are used for older children. If any irritation behind the child's ear is noted, return to the optical shop for proper adjustments.
  • Proper Placement of Glasses: The bridge of the frames should rest on the nose. The frames should not rest on your child's cheekbones or leave indentation marks.

Safety and protection of children's glasses:

  • Hi-impact lenses such as polycarbonate is essential for impact resistance and safety.
  • Proper care of the new eyeglasses is important. Clean daily using soap and water and a soft cloth. Return occasionally to the optical shop to insure a proper fit.
  • Avoid scratches on the lenses by keeping them in the provided case when not in use. A catchy slogan is "On your face or in the case".
  • Sunglass wear for children is important because of the need for 100% UV protection for the developing eyes. This protection can assist in preventing the development of a cataract in the other eye. For further information on sunglasses, click here.

Keeping those glasses on:

  • To minimize loss of the child's glasses, an elastic adjustable cord may be used which holds them snugly around the head. Discuss the safety aspects of an elastic adjustable cord with your doctor before use.
  • Positive reinforcement by other family members will encourage continued use.
  • Prepare your child for the possibility of teasing by other children and peers. Tell your child, "The cool kids wear glasses ".
