The Demon in the Freezer

Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone, The Cobra Event, and, his most recent novel, Demon in the Freezer discusses his experiences writing about bioterrorism and what he considers to be the reality of the threat. His talk focuses on smallpox, which is the central subject of The Demon in the Freezer. After discussing elements of the history of the smallpox virus and vaccine, Richard Preston touches on the story presented in The Demon in the Freezer. The story is based on the non-fiction, scientific research on the development of biodefenses against smallpox that do not require the traditional vaccine. (Lecture given on October 22, 2002)
