Public Health Emergency Preparedness: Lessons Learned and Progress Made Since 2001

Marcelle Layton, MD, is the Assistant Commissioner for the Communicable Disease Program at the New York City Department of Health. Dr. Layton discusses what happened in New York City in 2001 from her perspective and focuses on the lessons learned. The topics covered include surveillance - both traditional and syndromic, laboratory issues, planning for mass prophylaxis, and emergency communications. Dr. Layton also touches on the August 2003 Blackout and activities used to improve state and local capacity to respond to terrorism. (Lecture given on April 21, 2004)
