Crisis Communication - New and Emerging Systems

Dan Rutz, MPH, Special Assistant for Communications for the National Center for Infectious Diseases at CDC, describes how crisis communication strategies operate within the broader crisis communication plan. This presentation is an overview of crisis and emergency risk communication efforts at the CDC and notable efforts elsewhere, including the email based Health Alert Network and EpiX; phone/teleconferencing; communication with media; emergency TV/radio broadcast system, etc. Drawing from lessons learned from the anthrax crisis, as well as best practices from the fields of both risk and crisis communication, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has moved forward in meeting the needs of both partners and stakeholders in preparing for, responding to and recovering from the threat of bioterrorism and emergent diseases.
