An Orientation to Public Health Systems Research & Public Health Finance

Lloyd F. Novick, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of Community & Preventive Medicine, Department of Family Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University, serves as a moderator of a panel discussion about a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aimed at advancing public health systems research and public health finance. The lecture is the first in a four-part series. The speakers include: Hugh Tilson, MD, MPH, Clinical Professor of Public Health Leadership at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health; Peggy Honore, DHA, MHA, Chief Science Officer, Mississippi Department of Health; Aaron Fleischauer, PhD, MPH, Epidemiologist, Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Arlesia Brock, PhD, Graduate Research Assistant from the University of South Florida. Dr. Tilson and Dr. Honore discuss general aspects of public health services, research and health finance. While Dr. Fleischauer and Dr. Brock speak on more specific issues. Dr. Fleischauer focused his lecture on the day-to-day health surveillance system related to policy and financial issues, and Dr. Brock talked about the privatization of health care and whether it is truly cost effective.
