"Remembering Martin Luther King Through Service" Volunteers will plant trees in the Martin Luther King, Jr. historic district in conjunction with Trees Atlanta. Opening reception for the exhibits, “Music of Social Change” and “To Work His Wonders on a Scene: The Life and Times of William L. Dawson.” Sponsored by Special Collections and Archives of the Woodruff Library, the Department of Music, the Department of African American Studies, Office of Multicultural Programs and Services, and the Martin Luther King Holiday Observance Committee. John Blake, Atlanta Journal Constitution reporter will speak and sign copies of his book, Children of the Movement: The sons and daughters of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, George Wallace, Andrew Young, Julian Bond, Stokely Carmichael, Bob Moses, James Chaney, Elaine Brown and others reveal how the Civil Rights movement tested and transformed their families. EXHIBITS
“Music of Social Change” The Music of the African American freedom struggle became deeply intertwined with the political movement. This exhibition uses images and sounds from the 1940's to the 1970's to investigate some of the ways that the music affiliated with the freedom struggle grew up within and helped shape the movement. “To Work His Wonders on a Scene: The Life and Times of William L. Dawson.” Emory University will host the first major exhibition documenting the life of composer William L. Dawson who organized the School of Music at Tuskegee Institute and was the long-time conductor of its celebrated choir. The exhibition will feature items from the recently-acquired Dawson papers held by the Emory University Special Collections and Archives Division. The exhibition will include original musical scores, photographs, correspondence and personal artifacts. Schatten Gallery, Robert W. Woodruff Library. Emory University. January 18 - June 30, 2005.
