"Celebrating Excellence in Our Youth: Making a Difference"

"As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline, using only the weapon of love. Let no man pull you so low as to hate him. Always avoid violence. If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in you struggle, unborn generations will the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos."

Excerpted from "The Most Durable Power", a sermon delivered on 6 November 1956 in Montgomery, Ala. (Reprinted in Christian Century 74 [5 June 1957]:10-11.)

DEDICATION

This year we pay special tribute to four little girls killed during the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, September 15, 1963. The blast took the lives of four innocent black youth on a Sunday morning as they were preparing for their Sunday school lesson.

The tragedy was a result of tension following the desegregation of Birmingham's schools. Eight thousand people attended a joint funeral for three of the girls. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the eulogy.
