2002 Awards Criteria

This year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration focuses on Excellence and our Youth in the metropolitan area of Atlanta. By excellence we mean not only that state, quality or condition of excelling or superiority as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary , we also mean the process by which that state, quality or condition is achieved. Therefore, when we speak of excellence, we are speaking not only of those that have successfully achieved it, but we are speaking more broadly about those who are in the process of achieving it, as well as those who support and promote that process.

The deadline for nominations has passed.
Thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination.

We are seeking to identify those individuals and or groups that best exemplify the following criteria:

Excellence in Academic Enhancement:

We are seeking nominations for those individuals and/or groups achieving, promoting and increasing academic enhancement among youth. Academic excellence is not simply defined as obtaining a specified standard, but rather overcoming obstacles to achieve personal or group goals. Possible nominations for this category include students, teachers, tutors, mentors, or groups that support these individuals.

Excellence in Community Outreach:

We seek nominations for those individuals and/or groups achieving or helping others to achieve and/or overcome obstacles to build stronger, healthier and safer communities. For the purposes of this category, a community is a neighborhood, school district, or church, in which a nominated person and/or group lives and serves.

Excellence in the Arts:

We seek nominations for those individuals and groups achieving or promoting excellence in the arts among our youth. For the purposes of this category, "arts" includes: visual arts, dramatic arts, language arts, and performing arts.

Excellence in Sportsmanship:

We seek nominations for those individuals and groups achieving or promoting excellence in sportsmanship among youth. Excellence in sportsmanship is not based on the score at the end of the game, but by the spirit displayed or encouraged. Possible nominations for this category include athletes, coaches, team leaders, school administrators, officials, fans, and the media.

Excellence in Promoting Peace:

We have added the following category in light of recent events. We are seeking nominations for those individuals and groups promoting peace among our youth through cultural understanding, increased diversity and violence reduction.
