Monitoring Public Health at the 2004 G8 Summit: Routine and Syndromic Surveillance in Georgia

The goal of this web-based case study is to familiarize learners with how disease surveillance systems operate in Georgia, and the measures that were taken to monitor disease during the 2004 G8 Summit. The content is divided into seven sections: (1) Introduction; (2) G8 Summit; (3) Public Health Surveillance; (4) Surveillance in Georgia; (5) Case Study: Routine Surveillance; (6) Case Study: Syndromic Surveillance; and (7) Conclusion. A fictional account of a disease outbreak is presented, which illustrates the differences between routine surveillance and syndromic surveillance in identifying illnesses within a population.
