William Kilembe, M.D.

William Kilembe was born in Kitwe, Zambia. He completed his medical degree at the University of Zambia, Lusaka in 2003. He developed an interest in research during his student years, from 2001 to 2003, when he worked part-time for the Zambia Emory HIV Research Project (ZEHRP). In 2005, he was hired as a full time study physician with ZEHRP, where he is part of a team whose goal is to develop more effective HIV infection prevention methods. Dr. Kilembe is involved in various observational studies aimed to understand virologic and immunologic correlates of HIV infection. He has also been part of a team which has conducted an HIV vaccine trial in Zambia sponsored by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and is also involved in preparatory activities for upcoming clinical trials in HIV prevention. As a Fogarty trainee, Dr. Kilembe has been invited to undertake a course in conducting clinical trials by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) via its distance-learning program. He attained a Diploma in clinical trials in 2008 and he is currently studying for his Master’s degree.
