2001 Community Organization Award Recipient
ZAP Asthma Consortium, Inc.
The ZAP Asthma Consortium is a coalition of 16 public, private, and community
organizations formed to leverage the assets of the community and its stakeholders to
reduce preventable morbidity and mortality from asthma for children living within
Atlanta's Empowerment Zone. Data suggests that "economically disadvantaged children
with asthma who live in the inner city die at 4 times the rate of all other children and
are hospitalized at more than 3 times the rate of all other children. Nationally,
children with asthma miss more than 12 million school days each year." The paramount
goal of this organization is to improve the health and quality of life of children with
asthma. They have set out to do this by improving coordination of care and clinical
management, reducing exposures to in-home environmental triggers, and enhancing the
community capacity to manage the disease.
