Founded in 1991, the Greater Atlanta Affiliate of the Komen Foundation is dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer. This organization provides grant funds to benefit medically underserved, diverse populations in Metro Atlanta. Targeted groups include: African American, Hispanic, and Asian women of all ages. Their annual Race for the Cure raises money to provide revenue to fund grants to grassroots organizations that might not otherwise be able to serve the community.

"The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1982. The stated mission of the Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Volunteers nationwide work through local affiliates and Race for the Cure events across the country to further the Foundation's mission.

Proceeds from the Komen Race for the Cure Series fund both national research efforts and local breast cancer initiatives. A majority of the proceeds fund local community programs related to breast health education, screening and treatment and are based on specific area needs determined by local Komen Foundation representatives. A minimum of 25% of the proceeds fund national breast cancer research and project grants."
